WubiLearner and Wubi-zixing Input Method
There are many ways to input Chinese Characters into computer. One of many input methods that are popular now is Wubi-zixing Input Method (we simply call it Wubi after this).
When we found a Chinese Character we do not know how to pronounce if we use a input method that require we know how to do it, then we are stuck.
So to fill this gap, Wubi with other Character Shape based input method come to alive. Wubi crops Chinese Characters into Character Components and array of these Character Components then is
input into computer to form the Chinese Character we want. For example, Character ' 明' can be input as array of component '日' and '月'.
A good lesson and theory from other site from internet for learning Wubi is from Joe Wicentowski, you can find it and this link (you must set your computer user locale to Chinese-GB2312 or Chinese-GBK in order to see the page correctly)
http://www.yale.edu/chinesemac/wubi/xing.html. Now the previous link is missing, so we provide PDF version (hopefully can show up correctly in your computer) of this at this link:

Please before study this Introduction and Tutorial, download and install WubiLearner software and use it alongside with this tutorial to make the most from this tutorial.
Introduction to Wubi
Wubi is an input method for Chinese Characters based on Character Shape. Unlike Pinyin input method that is based on pronounciation/reading sound of Chinese, Wubi do not require user to know how to pronounce/read Chinese Characters he/she wants to input. Wubi require user know how to compose Chinese Characters from its Character Components. Wubi method crops Chinese Characters into many Characters Components.
Characters Components assigned to Keyboard's Keys (example GH)
[Fig: Wubi Keyboard G and H]
Key 'G' (first/one Horizontal Stroke) have these components : The Number 1 (一); King (王); Head of Green (青); The Number 5 (五); Right part of Money (钱).
Key 'H' (first/one Vertical Stroke) have these components : Eye (目); Top of Tool (具); Up (上); Right of Slave (仆); Vertical Line - as last stroke of Abundance (丰); Vertical Line with Hook - as the Bottom of Already(了); Head of Skin(皮); Head of Tiger (虎); Bottom of Foot(足).
Example: Some Familiar Chinese Characters
Now we proceed with giving examples from some familiar Chinese Characters:
明 (Bright) consists of 日 "J" (Sun) and 月 "E" (Moon), we see Keyboard J has 日 (Sun) and Keyboard E has 月 (Moon),
"JE" results to 1 明[ming2](je-jeg) and
"EJ" results to 3 胆[dan3](ej-ejg-ejgg) ; 4 腥[xing1](ejt-ejtg); 5 腽[wa4](ejl-ejlg)
木 "S" (tree) can be constructed into 本 (root), 林(forest), and 森(forest)
"SG" results to 2 本[ben3](sg-sgd)
"SS" results to 4 林[lin2](ss-ssy)
"SSS" results to 2 森[sen1](sss-sssu)
And 木 is the primary component of Key "S", the rule is its Key must be typed 4 times, so "SSSS" is Wubi for 木.
"SSSS" results to 1 木[mu4](ssss).
Primary components for Key "A" to "E" are as below :
"AAAA" 1 工[gong1](a-aaaa)
"BBBB" 1 子[zi3](bb-bbb-bbbb)
"CCCC" 1 又[you4](ccc-cccc)
"DDDD" 1 大[da4-dai4](dd-dddd)
"EEEE" 1 月[yue4](eee-eeee)
And you can continue it to "YYYY"
The Wubi keyboard and its Grouping
[Fig The complete Wubi Keyboard]
Now we are ready to figure out how Keyboard are assigned each to Character Components and how Wubi group keyboard keys.
See the Wubi Keyboard above. You can see Keys are grouped five by five with each group have its distinct color.
Blue (QWERT) , Orange (YUIOP), Magenta (ASDFG), Cyan (HJKLM), Yellow (XCVBN). So there are 5 groups.
Wubi group Keys with Components that has first stroke of the same type.
Group QWERT are components with LEFTward and UPward stroke as their first stroke
Group YUIOP are components with RIGHTward and DOT stroke as their first stroke
Group ASDFG are components with horizontal stroke as their first stroke
Group HJKLM are components with vertical stroke or vertical stroke with small-hook as their first stroke
Group XCVBN are components with hook stroke as their first stroke
See figure below for the illustration of Chinese's Strokes.

Practice
[Fig The WubiLearner software]
Now Open WubiLearner software. Press [Challenge]. WubiLearner will show an Challenge Chinese Character at the 2nd-from-left Top-Left Bottom.
Now we must choose Keys to assembly the Character the same with the Challenge Character.
The challenge is random, so your WubiLearner might show other Challenge Character.
Practice 01:
But in this practice, we the challenge character of 环.
The left of the character is '王' which resides at "G".
The right of the character is '不‘ which consist of '一' which resides at "G" and '小' which resides at "I"
Some Wubi of 环 is GGI.
The sofware will show : 1 环[huan2](ggi-ggiy)
You see actually the complete Wubi of 环 is GGIY. The Y (fourth position) is called Isolation Code. We will elaborate this Isolation Code rule at due time. For now just remember there is isolation code after all strokes are input.
Practice 02:
We got the challenge character of 咳.
The left of the character is '口' which resides at "K".
The right of the character is '亥‘ which consist of '亠' which resides at "Y" and '己' which resides at "N" and '丿' which resides at "T" and '人' which resides at "W"
So the Wubi of 咳 must be KYNTW, but Wubi Method rules if a character consists more that 5 component we only need to take the 1st,2nd,3rd, and the last component as Wubi code
So this KYNTW drop to KYNW
The sofware will show : 1 咳[hai1-ke2](kynw)
Practice 03:
We got the challenge character of 忐.
The top/head of the character is '上' which resides at "H".
The bottom of the character is '心‘ which resides at "N"
So the Wubi 忐 of is NU
We input NU into WubiLearner software.
The sofware will show : 2 忐[tan3](hnu)
You see actually the complete Wubi of 忐 is HNU. The U (3rd position) is called Isolation Code. We will elaborate this Isolation Code rule at due time. For now just remember there is isolation code after all strokes are input.
Practice 04:
We got the challenge character of 戡
We can use [Cheat] button to show the answer. Software will show the Wubi code for the character.
The top/head of the left part is '艹' which resides at "A".
The bottom of the character is '三‘ which resides at "D"
The bottom of the character is '八‘ which resides at "W"
The last component of the character is '戈‘ which resides at "A"
So the Wubi 戡 of is ADWA
We input ADWA into WubiLearner software.
The sofware will show : 1 戡[kan1](adwa)
Practice 05:
We got the challenge character of 氐
We can use [Cheat] button to show the answer. Software will show the Wubi code for the character.
The top-and-left part is like an angle which resides at "Q".
The bottom of the character is '七‘ which resides at "A"
The bottom of the character is '丶‘ which resides at "Y"
So the Wubi 氐 of is QAY
We input QAY into WubiLearner software.
The sofware will show : 1 氐[di1-di3](qay-qayi)
You see actually the complete Wubi of 氐 is QAYI. The I (4rd position) is called Isolation Code. We will elaborate this Isolation Code rule at due time. For now just remember there is isolation code after all strokes are input.
After you practice a lot. We will be more familier with Wubi. You can not type Wubi without see components at each Keyboard Key. But not all you can memorize by practicing. Now it is time to memorize components assigned to each key.
We will do so group by group.
Group QWERT:
[Fig Group QWERT]
[Fig Group QWERT]
